Ling Yao is one of twelve sons of the emperor of Xing, who is searching for the path to immortality. Because he is one of twelve sons, he must do something extraordinary for the emperor in order to be named as his successor, and the sick and aged emperor desires one thing: immortality. He and his loyal vassals and/or servants, Ran Fan and Fuu, set out on a journey to find the Philosopher's Stone, which is believed to grant the owner immortality. They end up in Amestris, where Al finds Ling passed out from hunger on the street side. After discovering the state of Al's body, Ling follows the Elcrics around, believing that they have found the way to immortality.
When the Elrics encounter the Homunculi, things start to get interesting for Ling. After killing Envy and Gluttony numerous times, only to have them come back to life again and again, Ling decides to pursue the Homunculi and find out the truth about them. He comes up with a plan with Ed and Al in which they will lure out one of the Homunculi, capture it, and then dissect it to find out what exactly makes it "immortal". Their plan backfires, however, when Ran Fan is badly injured by Wrath, and Ling is forced to escape with her. After she escapes, Ling does manage to capture Gluttony. When Gluttony sees Roy, who killed Lust, he goes berserk, and ends up swallowing Ed, Ling and Envy. The three are forced to work together to escape Gluttony's stomach, and Gluttony spits them out inside of the Homunculi's lair.
Father, the creator of the Homunculi, seeing Ling's strength, decides to make Ling the new Greed. Ling glady accepts, much to Ed and Al's surprise, and Father infuses him with the Philosopher's stone taken from the old Greed's body. Ling is shown in a sort of dream sequence talking to the spirit of Greed, who looks like the Ultimate Sheild form. In it, he agrees to give Greed his body in exchange for immortality, and for the most part, that is what happens. He has no memories of being the old Greed, and he is a completely different entity from Ling. However, Ling's soul is still present inside of the new Greed, as he falters when Ed mentions Ran Fan. Later on, Greed asks Ed to deliver a note written by Ling to Ran Fan, which says that he has found the Philosopher's Stone. Greed would not have known how to write in Xingese, so it can be concluded that Ling is still a concious entity, existing beside Greed's consciousness.
Before Ling is transformed into Greed, he's easygoing and funny, almost always wearing a goofy smile on his face. He has a tendency to pass out on street sides from "starvation" and be taken in by kind strangers. He also has a penchant for entering scenes by climbing in through windows. However, when it comes to obtaining immortality, he is serious. He also cares a lot about his vassals, especially Ran Fan. Even though they view failure as the ultimate dishonor to him, he refuses to leave them behind.
After he's transformed into Greed, he's a lot less easygoing, and more serious. He denies that he is Ling, but he still maintains that humans shouldn't be made light of.
In Avoria, Greed's powers as a Homunculus will be diminished, so Ling will have more control over his body than he does in the manga.
